Unity ECS/DOTS

My skill level: Advanced

Unity ECS/DOTS (Entity Component System / Data-Oriented Technology Stack) is Unity's data-oriented framework for building highly performant, scalable games and simulations. By laying out data for cache efficiency and parallel execution, it makes it possible to simulate huge numbers of entities that a traditional GameObject/MonoBehaviour approach could not handle.

Key Features:

  • Entity Component System (ECS): Separates data (components) from behaviour (systems) for a cache-friendly, composable architecture.
  • Burst compiler: Compiles C# jobs to highly optimized native code using SIMD instructions.
  • C# Job System: Safely runs work across multiple threads, avoiding race conditions by design.
  • Massive scale: Efficiently simulates tens of thousands of entities at stable frame rates.
  • Deterministic simulation: Well suited to networked and physics-heavy gameplay that requires reproducible results.

Unity ECS/DOTS is ideal for performance-critical projects — large crowds, RTS-scale unit counts, particle-like simulations, and anything where the classic object-oriented approach hits a CPU wall.
